Yesterday was the unveiling of the new Garrett Metal detector that was hinted at a couple of weeks ago in a video posted to both their website and Youtube.
The Garrett AT Max is the newest metal detector to be added to the Garrett family and is said to have many new features that will help you to push your metal detecting limits to the “MAX”.
The question is does the Garrett AT Max really have enough new features and upgrades to make it worth upgrading from the original AT Pro or spending the extra money (+200 USD) to get it instead of going with the original AT Pro or AT Gold.
Today we will go through all of the new features of the new Garrett AT Max metal detector and will find out whether this metal detector is really worth getting.

Garrett AT Max Features
The Garrett AT Max has a lot of the same features and options that is featured on the Garrett AT Pro and AT Gold, however it also boasts a few new features as well some original features that have been enhanced to bring you a metal detector said to help you push the limits of your metal detecting experiences.
Below are some of the new and enhanced features of the new AT Max metal detector.
The new Garrett AT Max metal detector features built in wireless technology (Z-Lynk) which is 6 times faster than bluetooth and comes with a set of Garrett wireless headphones. This eliminates having to deal with a long headphone cord that often gets in the way when detecting and recovering a target.
Enhanced Detection Depth
Go deeper with increased transmit power and enhance electronics included in the new Garrett AT Max. You will notice a significant increase in the detection depth of this detector.
Optimized Detection Frequency
The Garrett AT Max has an optimized detection frequency of 13.6 Khz which is just a bit lower than the AT Pro at 15 khz. This change is said to optimize the detection ability of silver, gold jewelry and brass relics.
Finally this AT series metal detector is equipped with a backlight so that you can easily see at night or if you’re hunting in a low light environment.
True All-Metal mode
True all-metal mode offers the ability to detect all metals and allows you to reach the full potential depth of the detector. The new AT Max features an all metal mode that will help its users to do just that.
Enhanced Ground Balance
The ground balance on the new AT Max detector has been enhanced to include 175 points of resolution. What this means for you is that it has been optimized for more soil conditions including salt water and other varying degrees of mineralized soil.
Automatic Ground Balance Window
Some of the terrain that you metal detect has varying degrees of mineralization or there are areas where you may hunt 2 or 3 different soil types.
The new Garrett AT Max metal detector automatically ground balances to these variations so that you can focus more on finding targets.
The AT Max comes with new controls as well. Well actually it comes with a new button specifically called shift. This allows for a much easier and less cumbersome way to adjust and use all of the different functions with just one hand while hunting.
A new comfortable hand grip that has been introduced on the new Garrett AT Max will allow for a more comfortable user experience. Especially on extended uses of the metal detector.
This new hand is non porous and so it will not soak in dirt or other debris keeping the hand grip clean.
There are more features that are the same as the AT Pro /AT Gold which I did not include but can be viewed here – Garrett AT Pro Review.

How to Use Garrett AT Max Pinpointing Feature
The pinpointing feature on the Garrett AT Max is the same as the AT Pro and is used in the exact same way.
In order to use the AT Max pinpoint feature follow the steps below:
Step 1: After receiving a signal for a target, place the coil beside the suspected location of the target.
Step 2: Press the “Pinpoint” button on the AT Max metal detector control box.
Step 3: Move coil side to side and front to back to locate where on the ground you get the highest peak signal. (most LED’s lit up and loudest audio)
Step 4: Take note of the spot on the ground and begin recovering the target.
AT Max Controls Explained
The above picture (From Garrett AT Max Manual) shows what the controls on the ATX look like. Each of these lettered controls are explained below to give you a better understanding of how they work.
Power On/Mode Button
This button allows you to turn the machine on/off by pressing and holding the button until the detector turns on/off. It also allows you to change between the different search modes: All-Metal, Custom, Coins, Zero.
This button allows you to turn on the iron audio function which will allow you to hear the iron in the ground.
This will help you to get a bigger picture of what is in the ground and will help you better determine if the target you are detecting is good or trash.
Enables the use of the pinpoint function on the Garrett AT Max. Press and hold this button and begin pinpointing protocol.
This button allows you to eliminate certain target zones so no notifications will be given for those items in that zone. This means you can focus on just the specific targets you would like to find.
This button also enables the backlight which is a new function of the AT Max detector.
Simply press shift button and then press Elim button to turn on/off the backlight.
Shift/Auto Gnd Bal.
A new button added to the AT Max that will help to simplify even further the process of accessing functions on the detector while hunting.
Pressing the shift button will access the functions outlined in orange lettering.
Pressing and holding the shift button will allow you to auto ground balance. This is done by pumping the coil up and down until the noise is gone and then releasing the shift button.
Notch Disc/Iron Disc
This button allows for you to discriminate certain ID zones as well as allows you to set the amount of iron discrimination.
The AT Max has 8 points of sensitivity to help increase detection on smaller items in the ground. This button will allow you to adjust for more or less sensitivity based on your current soil conditions.
This button allows you to adjust the threshold, which is the ground noise to allow you to hear more of what your detector is trying to tell you. This allows you to be able to really pick up those faint signals that would otherwise be missed.
This button also allows for manual ground balancing, so that you can adjust the ground balance to be more sensitive to certain items, or so that you can further adjust for soil conditions.

AT Max Introduction Video
The Garrett AT Max has some great new upgrades and enhancements, and for those of you who are looking for a mid level detector and want the quality and proven performance of the AT Pro with the added functionality and convenience of the wireless, improved depth and backlight then the AT Max is a great choice.
If you’re looking for a minor upgrade from the AT Pro to fix some of those “it would be nice” options then the AT Max will not disappoint.
For those looking for a serious upgrade from the AT Pro that is on the more extensive side or an upgrade from a high level machine, the AT Max will likely disappoint.
I really think that had the AT Max included multi frequency detection and an updated/new coil this metal detector would see a lot more popularity.
All in all the AT Max looks to be a great machine that offers the same quality that Garrett is known for and I would definitely recommend it.
